Once again, I’m joining in with Tynga at Tynga’s Reviews and Marlene of Reading Reality for Stacking Shelves, where you share the real and virtual books you have added to your shelves in the last week.
So it had to happen – I fell off the NetGalley wagon! Only for one book though and – in the way that my brain works – I have decided it doesn’t really count because it’s for a book that isn’t out till next April so there is plenty of time to read and review it (yes, I know, it sounds like an excuse but I think it’s a good one!).
I just couldn’t help myself though because it’s for one of my favourite authors, Catherine McKenzie, who hasn’t written a book I haven’t liked, and this one will be no exception by the sounds of it….
Can you hide a secret with the whole world watching?
When an explosion rips apart a Chicago building, the lives of three women are forever altered.
A year later, Cecily is in mourning. She was supposed to be in the building that day. Instead, she stood on the street and witnessed it going down, with her husband and best friend inside. Kate, now living thousands of miles away, fled the disaster and is hoping that her past won’t catch up with her. And Franny, a young woman in search of her birth mother, watched the horror unfold on the morning news, knowing that the woman she was so desperate to reconnect with was in the building.
Now, despite the marks left by the tragedy, they all seem safe. But as its anniversary dominates the media, the memories of that terrifying morning become dangerous triggers. All these women are guarding important secrets. Just how far will they go to keep them?
Release date: 3rd April, 2018
Other than, I was really good and didn’t request any books (maybe I wished for a few, but – again – does that count?) and the only other one added to the shelves was a competition win. Thanks to the lovely Emma at Damp Pebbles, I am now the proud owner of The Silent Companions by Laura Purcell. You can read here review here.
Inspired by the work of Shirley Jackson and Susan Hill and set in a crumbling country mansion, The Silent Companions is an unsettling gothic ghost story to send a shiver down the spine…
Newly married, newly widowed Elsie is sent to see out her pregnancy at her late husband’s crumbling country estate, The Bridge.
With her new servants resentful and the local villagers actively hostile, Elsie only has her husband’s awkward cousin for company. Or so she thinks. But inside her new home lies a locked room, and beyond that door lies a two-hundred-year-old diary and a deeply unsettling painted wooden figure – a Silent Companion – that bears a striking resemblance to Elsie herself.
And that’s it for me for this week. What about you – what did you buy, borrow, request or loan out from the library?
Emma x
I also love Catherine McKenzie’s books…and went over to NetGalley to request The Good Liar. Can’t wait! Thanks for sharing, and enjoy.
The Silent Companions looks good, too. Enjoy your new week.
