Morning all and welcome to another Sunday and September, with the start of school and cooler days. I’d say I’m going to miss summer but it doesn’t feel like we’ve really had one here. Thankfully we haven’t had the rain and flooding of recent years but the sun just doesn’t seem to have shone for long enough or hot enough. Hey ho!
With the very British moan about the weather out of the way, I will now make a very British apology for not having gotten to visiting people’s blogs or replying to comments from the last few days…because I have been on holiday. I hope to catch up this week with everything.
Unlike my last holiday, this was a staycation with my in-laws visiting. We had a great time visiting some of our favourite places like York Minster and Richmond Castle. We also ate too much (mainly in the way of cake) and I am determined to be good this week and start the much planned for plan to get my weight under control. I also read too little, only finishing one book which is due for review tomorrow – Close to Home by Robert Dugoni – and posted only three times…
The Thirst by Jo Nesbo was my only review. I thought this was a great book, the 11th in the Harry Hole series, with Harry and Nesbo back on form after a few recent outings. This was a clever, if slightly gory, plot with lots of twists, turns and red herrings. Plus, there is the dark grittiness you get in Scandinavian crime writing.
Follow You Home by Mark Edwards was supposed to be my next read. I got through about 50 pages! Not because it isn’t good but just because time was against me. I hope to get back to it today.
And, finally, I recapped my August reads, which were pretty good if I do say so myself – not one dodgy book amongst the, and that rarely happens. My book of the month was a difficult one but I finally settled on Nothing Stays Buried by P J Tracy.

So glad to hear you’ve had a good break Emma and eaten lots of good cake. It’s funny because although the school terms no longer have any relevance to my life there is something about this time of year which heralds a marking point in the year. I am trying to cut down on the treats too!

I’m 100% with you on the weather we’ve had (or not had!) this summer but I LOVE autumn so I’m happily waving goodbye to summer and skipping towards my hoodies, trying to find logs for my fire (cause apparently it’s “too early” for them to be readily available) and drinking my weight in hot ribena and hot chocolate.

Are Jo Nesbo books generally gory? I’ve not read one yet. I love crime/thriller novels but not when there’s too much gore.

It really was. This one wasn’t too bad but I’m a whimp. I would say previous books have had more graphic scenes than this one.

Sometimes a Staycation is the best way to relax. Especially with family, and visiting some places near home that visitors always enjoy seeing. It reminds me of mine with my son and DIL, visiting two summers ago (has it been that long?), from Berlin. Now they live in Prague.

It is hard to believe that it is already September. Our weather here has been okay, been rainy from the feeder bands from Harvey but nothing severe. Glad to hear you had a nice time with the in laws. 🙂

I’m glad the staycation was such a success – plenty of cake… yum! I’ll echo your sentiments regarding the disappointing August. Fingers crossed we have a lovely sunny September – I reckon we could do with a lovely Indian summer. I’m delighted the reading was so good last month – it’s always a joy when you get a run of great books, isn’t it. I hope this week continues in the same vein, Emma:).

Yes… I’m very much missing it, too. Normally at this time of the year the weather is beautiful with that lovely golden sunshine you get in September. I’ll keep my fingers crossed it all returns this coming week-end!

“With the very British moan about the weather out of the way”… That made me laugh. 😀 I wish we could say the same about the weather here in the Southern US! It has been so terribly hot, and is finally cooling down over the past week or so. Bring on Fall!!

We do nothing but say it’s too hot, too cold, too wet…it makes us happy. Strangely we had two weeks on the west coast earlier in the summer where it was mid-80s and it was my mother in law who is from Florida complaining it wasn’t hot enough 😋

Sorry you haven’t had a decent summer, but nice you have had a bit of a staycation. I remember visiting York Minister thousands of years ago, well not really but was back in the early eighties when I was visiting some relatives who are now back home in New Zealand again.

The last two days were too hot and too bright here in California. It was so hot outside that the inside wall to my bedroom was hot to the touch. Come see what I’m reading

I’m happy to feel an autumnal air with the arrival of September – I think summer in the UK is just a pain to be honest… At least you know what you’re getting with the colder months.
