Tuesday Intro: The Highway by CJ Box

imageThis week, I’m linking up again with Diane at Bibliophile by the Sea who hosts a post every Tuesday for people to share the first chapter / paragraph of the book they are reading, or thinking of reading soon. In really enjoy these tasters when I read them on other blogs so wanted to join in.

This week, the intro isn’t from a book I’m about to read but one I read on my holidays and that I plan on posting a review for shortly – The Highway by C. J. Box.  It is another of those books that sat on my kindle for ages before guilt made me finally start reading.  Here’s what it’s about…

When two sisters set out across a remote stretch of Montana road to visit their friend, little do they know it will be the last time anyone might ever hear from them again. The girls — and their car — simply vanish.  Former police investigator Cody Hoyt has just lost his job and has fallen off the wagon after a long stretch of sobriety.  Convinced by his son and his former rookie partner, Cassie Dewell, he begins the drive south to the girls’ last known location.  As Cody makes his way to the remote stretch of Montana highway where they went missing, Cassie discovers that Gracie and Danielle Sullivan aren’t the first girls who have disappeared fin this area.  This majestic landscape is the hunting ground for a killer whose viciousness is outmatched only by his intelligence.  And he might not be working alone.  Time is running out for Gracie and Danielle…Can Cassie overcome her doubts and lack of experience and use her innate skill?   Can Cody Hoyt battle his own demons and find this killer before another victim vanishes on the highway?

And here’s how it starts…

Lewis and Clark County Montana Sheriff’s Department Investigator Cassandra Dewell winced when a pair of headlights broke over a rise onto a long treeless bench in the foothills of the Big Belt Mountains north of Helena.  She was on the worst assignment of her nascent career, and she hoped it would be a failure. If she was successful, her partner – a dark legend, her mentor, named Cody Hoyt – would likely lose his job and go to prison.

What do you think? Would you keep reading?

  1. What an opening! The blurb had me hooked but that has me curious! 🙂

    1. It’s a good one isn’t it. Makes it a real page turner.

  2. I like the way the author immediately lets us know the setting and what’s at stake. I’d keep reading to find out more.
Thank you for leaving a comment on my blog today.

    1. It definitely sets the scene, though I wasn’t prepared for where it ended up.

  3. I really like the sound of this one. Definitely keep reading. I’ll look forward to your review.

    1. It was a good read. Now just to write it up!

  4. I have only read one book by C.J. Box, but my husband loves his books. Don’t think he’s read this one. I’ll pass the recommendation along to him. 🙂

    1. I haven’t read any before and only got this because it was 99p on Amazon. I will be buying more though.

  5. I’ve been collecting CJ Box’s books to read them all in one big binge read, they all sound so great! Almost certain I have this one somewhere!

    1. It looks like he’s written quite a few so that will be quite a binge! Good luck.

  6. This sounds like it could be a real page-turner. I like the Montana setting, too!

    1. Montana is always somewhere I wanted to visit. It’s a nice, remote, setting for this type of book.

  7. I listened to this one and thought it was okay, but, I just finished book 2, in that series, Badlands, and it was awesome. enjoy

    1. I can’t wait. I definitely enjoyed enough to read more.

  8. I’ve never read this author, but the excerpt and blurb made me want to pick this one up right away. Thanks for sharing…and for visiting my blog.

    1. It was my first book but there plenty more – he’s quite prolific by the looks of it so I will be reading more.

  9. I like the opening and the setting, so I’d keep reading!

  10. I love the immediate conflict for the character. Sounds like a good author.

    1. He is or at least this book is. I will be reading more!

  11. I would definitely keep reading! This sounds fantastic and this is an author I’ve really been meaning to read. I hope you enjoy it!

    1. It’s definitely worth it. Another author I wonder why it’s taken me so long to get to!

  12. Oh Emma, this is a great story, but it gets a little dark. I read this a couple of years ago as a friend of mine has a connection to the author. This was the first C.J. Box book I read and went on to read several more. Actually, my husband has become a huge fan – he’s read them all! I hope it was a good read for you. I’ll come back and check your review.

    1. I have finished it and it does get dark. An early twist I didn’t expect. I can see why you’d read more!

  13. Just love it. One of my favourite authors

    1. A first for me. I will be reading more though. Thanks for visiting 😄

  14. […] shared the beginning of a book I have read but yet to review (The Highway by C. J. Box) for the Tuesday Intro and wrote about why I’m not very good at setting or keeping track of my reading goals as part […]

Let me know what you're thinking...
