Book Blogger Hop: To blog roll or not to blog roll

imageI’m joining in with Billy at Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer‘s book blogger hop again this week, where they post a question which you and other bloggers answer, hopping from blog to blog to see people’s answers. This week, the question is…

Do you keep a blog roll list?

The first thing I need to do is admit I wasn’t sure.  I have recently updated my blog to show posts I have liked and also blogs I follow and I thought “is that a blog roll”.  So, rather than show my ignorance (though I guess I just have by admitting I wasn’t sure) I did a bit of a search to see just what was meant by blog roll.  Which brought me to the answer, no, I don’t have one but I think I might as it sounds like a really good idea.

I think that saying blog roll made me think it only needed to be about blogs but actually if I have understood it correctly, you can share any internet links and quite often I will come across something I would like to share beyond Facebook or Twitter.  I’m thinking of the short stories I find online for example – there are so many good ones out there but I don’t do much be tweet them when I find them and that’s that.  A blog roll might be a good way to share them.

My one concern is how much time it will take as we already know I’m not the greatest with work / life balance or spending a huge amount of time on my blog vs. reading (always the priority).  What do you think – do you have a blog roll? Is it worth doing one and does it take a lot of time or could I fit it in?

  1. Hmm… I think of a blog roll as links to the blogs I regularly read, so that’s a bit time-comsuming to set up but then only needs updating as people drop off the blogosphere or new people come along. Links to specific posts might require more maintenance, I think…

    • That’s my worry – the time it will take. I much prefer things that are automated so I can add to the site then not worry about. It does feel like a good idea though…

  2. I do like the idea of a list of blogs that I visit – but I don’t have one. I do have a widget of posts I’ve recently visited which by it’s very nature changes – so I suppose my answer is sort of 😏

  3. To me, a blog roll is a list of blogs I love, and visit often. I used to have one, but I was just kidding myself that I was going to be visiting ALL of those blogs regularly…..lol. There’s just not enough time. Then I started restricting my list to blogs I really loved. That didn’t work, either. So I just removed it altogether. You can still see how many blogs I follow by looking at my Blogger profile.

I think your idea of posting links to posts you’ve read and liked is a great idea! This is not a blog roll, really, but it’s still nice to have something like that on your blog, I think. However, I would suggest putting this list on a separate page that people can access from the top of your home page. Putting it in your sidebar might get to unwieldy after a while. Lol. This is what happened with my own blog roll!

Thanks for sharing!! Have a GREAT weekend!! : )

    • I can see how easily it is that things take on a life of their own. I am not sure if I would use it to visit blogs I follow bizarrely because I use the reader on WordPress and that helps me keep track. I suppose in part it’s about sharing with others who I like to read.

  4. I’ve been thinking of adding a blog roll page, just because it is also easier on my brain and I don’t have to remember all those urls exactly, haha. But I’m not sure about putting it up yet. I think sharing posts you like is also something you could potentially do in your Sunday wrap up.

    • It’s the time doing it. You are right about sharing on my Sunday post. I keep meaning to then forgetting what I’ve liked during the week. I should start adding them as favourites or something so I can back track while I’m writing.

  5. I am such a dummie, I didn’t even know what blog-roll is or that you can display on side what blogposts you liked.
I’ll have to research if I could do that on my blog (because I don’t know if you can do that on every theme or just on special ones) but I like the idea of habing it and will put it on my sidebar, if I’ll be able.
I think it is a nice addition to a blog plus it can help your visitors to discover new bloggers.
