This Week, Next Week: 7th February, 2016

Morning and hello from my first weekly update since the end of November…I really am a slacker!  This week has been quite a good one for me, though I only posted twice – review of The Sisters by Claire Douglas which I enjoyed but have to say didn’t seem anywhere as good in hindsight and after reading Tina Seskis’ One Step Too Far. The problem was there were too many comparisons to make – both involved twins, secrets and lies and people running away from their past.

Also this week, my horrid, horrid, cold has gone and work has finally plateaued, so whilst I’m busy it’s no longer insane. I feel like I can breathe – and just in time too because we are due to go on holiday next week….7 days of sun, sea and sand – I can’t wait!  It will be nice to get away with my family and also from the icky weather.

I’ve already got a fully loaded kindle and managed to snag a free months trial on an app called Magster so have lots of magazines to read too. Life couldn’t be better really. If I can focus for long enough before we got I am going to try reading one of the two books I bought this week, both of which I’ve heard good things about….

In A Dark, Dark Wood by Ruth Ware

imageNora hasn’t seen Clare for ten years. Not since Nora walked out of school one day and never went back.

In a dark, dark wood there was a dark, dark house

Until, out of the blue, an invitation to Clare’s bachelorette party arrives. Is this a chance for Nora to finally put her past behind her?

And in the dark, dark house there was a dark, dark room

But something goes wrong. Very wrong.

And in the dark, dark room…Some things can’t stay secret for ever.

Disclaimer by Renee Knight

imageFinding a mysterious novel at her bedside plunges documentary filmmaker Catherine Ravenscroft into a living nightmare.

Though ostensibly fiction, The Perfect Stranger recreates in vivid, unmistakable detail the terrible day Catherine became hostage to a dark secret, a secret that only one other person knew–and that person is dead.

Now that the past is catching up with her, Catherine’s world is falling apart. Her only hope is to confront what really happened on that awful day even if the shocking truth might destroy her.

Have you read either of them – where should I start? Please tell me I won’t be disappointed…and enjoy whatever you’re reading this week!

  1. Sun , sea and a fully loaded Kindle- sounds like you’re all set! Enjoy your holiday! I’m curious about Disclaimer- I saw a few reviews a while back, and I like the idea of the mysterious book being about her. Interesting premise. I hope it’s good.

  2. In a Dark Dark Wood sounds interesting. I’ve read Disclaimer and enjoyed it. Didn’t love it, but enjoyed it.

I’m glad you’re feeling better and I hope work (and life) remains less-insane over the coming week/s!

    • I wish I could remember where I read the reviews of both…Disclaimer doe seem good so far but in I wonder if it will be another where the secret lets it down because it isn’t that bad?

    • Me too! Disclaimer is good so far – I can’t see how it is going to end and there are only 100 pages to go. Here’s to In A Dark Dark Wood being good too!

  3. Your get-away sounds wonderful! What could be better? I enjoyed One Step Too Far, but I wasn’t reading a similar book at the time.

Sometimes stories of escape from the past, missing children, etc., seem to proliferate and make it hard to truly enjoy them.

Have a great vacation! Enjoy your week….and here are MY WEEKLY UPDATES

    • I am counting the sleeps! I do seem to be reading in themes at the moment. Not sure how it happens as I tend not to read the blurbs before I pick up a book (once it’s made it to the shelf!)

  4. In a Dark, Dark, Wood sounds perfect. I am glad you are feeling better but green with envy over your salt, sun and sand vacation. Have an awesome time and drink one of those umbrella drinks for me!

  5. Good your work has eased off a little and I do hope you enjoy your holiday! I loved both In a Dark, Dark Wood and Disclaimer and I do hope you do too. Disclaimer was a book I recommended to loads of people last year and they all enjoyed it.
